Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise encouraged her passion for art and creativity. The aunt she had was a nurse and was a night shift worker so she could dedicate her time to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the arts can serve to promote activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother, with a conscience for social issues, and instilled DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay lived in Compton throughout her life, but would spend every summer with her extended family members located in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father was a witness to the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, would later inspire her to write a script for a film based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and received degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay was in college when she became attracted to the field of production for the broadcast media. Her career began as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to examine the garbage from a home belonging to a jury member. Her work left her dissatisfied in journalism, so she made the decision to go into the publicity industry. DuVernay was hired straight out of college as a junior publicist at an unassuming studio. She was promoted to the position and set up her own public relations company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Besides PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
